Gently Down The Stream

Nothing meaningful to this post. Just a slice.

The attorney and I have decided we’re going to take lessons and join a rowing club.

I don’t mean just paddling through a creek rowing. (Although doesn’t Jake look adorable doing it?) I mean gliding across a lake in a skinny little boat on a four or eight man team rowing.

I’m pretty excited about it. It’s bound to be great exercise. Your whole body gets worked out and cardio, too. Plus, I love water sports (the kind that don’t involve pee) and it seems like it will just be fun.

We got the idea a few weeks ago when we were driving around and happened upon a regatta. We got out and watched and were both fascinated by it.

It’s been a little bit of a struggle for us to find something athletic that we can do together. He’s been trying to get me to run with him for months, but, as I have said before, unless I’m running from something, I don’t much see the point.

Besides, having been a runner for so many years, he’d have a decided advantage over me and I would probably slow him down.

He did put up a basketball goal in his driveway (the portable kind because his OCD - which is worse than mine, I believe - won’t allow him to let it visually a part of the look of the house. He can’t even leave his car in the driveway. Always in the garage. Door closed.) But, I have an advantage in hoops (even though he is taller).

We’ve tried tennis. But he goes into a dark place when he plays tennis, so I really don’t stand a chance.

About the only option we have for a level playing field is wrestling. But, that would just turn into something else completely (although still working out the entire body and cardio, too). And we need to get out the house some.

So, that’s why rowing is perfect. Besides the fact that (from what I read) we are both naturally built for the sport, we are both completely new to it. And instead of competing against each other, we would be part of a team.

Together.

Which is the most important part.

Life is but a dream.

    Oh, there’ll be competition.

He goes into a dark place playing tennis? Is he uber competitive?

I spank my hubby all the time. He told me the last time that he was quiting it all together after I waxed him 6-0, 6-0. I told him what he was doing wrong and what he needs to work on, but it didn’t seem to help. Hmfph!

And may you merrily, merrily grow together. Great idea.

mmmmm…….some beautiful Jake……………..did you post anything under the photo? My lustful eyes couldn’t make it past this dreamy image. Many thanks……………….

I went to out for the rowing team in college. I walked into practice and saw mostly six foot tall muscle gods and was very disheartened, but the coach came right over to me and asked me what I weighed…I said 110 lbs. He said “You can be a coxswain.” And I coxed for two years…loved it.

Best of luck! I moved to Austin about a year ago and a co-worker was in an intro to rowing class…I loved the idea, joined the next class, and now I’m hooked!

Heck, even just simple canoing can be fun. Or you could just get a Wii and play Super Smash Bros Brawl. And you could do stuff with the Wii sticks afterwards.

I’ll admit that I wouldn’t have pegged you as the sort of fellow that would be interested in this particular sport, but you’re right — it has all the benefits. You never cease to amaze and surprise me. What a terrific idea! I hope you guys enjoy your time together and I’m sure you will both excel in rowing.

    Tony!
Rowing is a great workout, about the best there is for the whole body. It just misses your chest, but I’m sure you do enough pushups on the attorney to make up for that.
Both of you being tall will be a great advantage but you carrying an extra oar in your pants could get in the way!

We have rowing at our yacht club (sounds all snooty buts its not). My husband even bought a singles shell and learned but hasn’t really kept up with it. You’re gonna love it! We have very good friends that are very serious rowers and compete in the Head of the Charles and other international regattas at the masters level. When you two get good you can buy a double and go by yourselves and compete that way. I know you guys will just be awesome at it. You could buy a concept 2 or higher erg for your house. Maybe the attorney already has one. You are just going to love rowing! Besides, it gets you out on the water and is so peaceful. Sigh.

that is so fucking cute. it makes me want to reach for my barf bag.

Great idea for finding a “middle ground” activity. I wish you luck

I, like Mike, coxed for a brief and shining moment on the Potomac in college. I liked giving orders to eight fit guys and keeping up a rhythm, but the two mile run to the boathouse killed me. So don’t let the attorney get you to run by saying it will be a good way to get to the ’shell’. Have fun with the exercise and the communion with each other and the water. This is another activity where your bodies will have to work in sync for everything to work out well.

Wow. So much conflict over sporting. . . I actually laughed at the “he goes into a dark place during tennis”.

Knitting? Jousting? Ping Ping! I find a rousing game of Jenga can even things out. Although my older sister verges on palpitations during that one.

  15. Greg Says:

Jake’s adorable just about any time…

Rowing sounds like some cool common ground…I was on a war canoe team one summer half a lifetime ago…great to be out there on the water, and as a bonus, it’s a great work-out, too.

    Enjoy!

“Dark place when playing tennis” Oh I know how he feels - I’m a completely different person when I play softball. Yeah, I’m a bit Uber competitive that way.

Wrestling…..just ad another index card to my rolodex of masturbatory fantasies.

It sounds as though you guys are getting a lot of things to opt for when looking to do something together. I think that’s great and helpful to keep communications open with each other. I admire the lengths you two are going to in order to make yourselves successful together.

    AWWWWWW…

I think that is one of the most adorable couple things I’ve heard on this blog! (Well, the thought of the two of you cuddling nekkid on a Saturday morning is rather a lovely thought…) Good for both of you in trying to find some common ground to share in, even though you exercise in different ways. Stretching your horizons with your sweetie - doesn’t get much better than that!

  19. David Says:

You two are perfect for each other. Great that you get to share it with us your senior year. I’m happy for you both.
