I told you something was coming and it finally did. At 1:17 PM Eastern time today.

The blog received it’s 5000th comment!

I had hoped it would have happened back on September 1, when the blog turned started it’s fourth year and I posted my 400th post. But ya’ll know that two coming together is hard enough. Three is pretty near impossible.

The 5000th commenter was none other than Lexxicuss. It’s cool that this milestone is represented by someone who is pretty much a daily reader (which he happened to mention in his winning comment) and very, very cool that the comment was posted on an entry about Jake, and coolest of all that because I was off work today I got to see it happen. (These little coincidences help satisfy my obsession with order.)

This screen capture from my dashboard in WordPress (the engine that powers this little blog) says it all. And it’s 5000 pure reader comments because if I have a response to a comment, I always do it in e-mail.

Five thousand comments in four-hundred thirty-four posts averages out to be about 11 1/2 comments per post. I guess that’s a decent amount considering some posts have zero comments. The most number comments I have ever had for a single post was 37 for the one where I talk about showing my pecker to a co-worker (go figure). It’s probably no surprise that the category that gets the most comments is “attorney” and the one that gets the least is “football.”

But, this blog has never been a big comment generator, compared to some others who are always in the 30-50 range (and more!). I always found that interesting considering I often get more traffic than others. Folks around here seem to come in for a read and move on. But that’s okay, cause reading it what I want them most to do.

I referred to the 5000th comment as a winning one. That’s because I had decided that when the time came, I would give a prize. So, in honor the the 5K milestone, I’m giving Lexxicus an official LARGETONY T-shirt to have all his own.

Thanks Lexxicuss, and thanks to everyone who put in the other 4,999 comments (I wish there was a way I could track who has commented the most, I’d send them a T-shirt too!).

There’ still 255 days until blog’s end. My post average is about one every three days, so by my calculations that should be about another 977.5 comments.

Not gonna hit 6,000. Sigh.
