Resolute

Another year comes to an end. At the risk of sounding like an old man, doesn’t it seem like each year goes by faster than the previous? I wonder what it must be like for Granny at 89 years old.
Tonight people will go out to dinner, to clubs, and parties. Some will stay home with someone special. Many will have someone to kiss at midnight. Many will wake up tomorrow with a list of resolutions to tackle in 2007. Several will fail by the end of the week.
A fellow blogger wrote a post earlier this week where he said he did not believe in resolutions because he saw no reason to bother with something that you are going to fail at anyway.
I don’t necessarily believe in resolutions either. But I come to it from a different place. It’s more that I don’t believe in the word “resolution.” It’s such an ominous sounding word. Like it should always be spoken with heavy reverb. I think people tend to fail from the intimidation brought about by the word.
So, why not call it a goal? We tackle goals every moment of our lives. Not just on January 1.
Wash the dishes. Pick up milk from the store. Finish a chapter in a book. Hundreds of little goals everyday. All those little goals add up to fulfilling bigger goals, which fulfill even bigger goals, and eventually your resolution might be resolved.
I think when we make resolutions, we focus so much on the big goal that we lose sight of the little achievements it’s going to take along the way.
You want to quit smoking? Maybe the first small goal is to clean out the drawer where you keep your cigarettes and lighter.
Take your goals moment by moment. It takes several moments to make a minute, several minutes to make an hour, several hours to make a day. Before you know it, you’re on to another year. They are coming faster and faster, after all.
True, you still might fail at the larger goal, but that’s no reason to not celebrate the smaller successes. At least you can be proud that you made the effort. Sometimes the effort is fulfilling in itself.
Happy New Year, everybody.

You’re so right. Little successes build up to bigger ones. It’s even better to have a big goal at the end and work backwards from it to ensure that you’re making the right steps to hit it in time.
