About Baked

I have been doing holiday baking since Saturday night and my mind is baked. And a little bit stewed, too.

That’s because I have been making rum cakes.

For years, Granny has made rum cakes for her friends for Christmas. The last few years, I have helped her with it, but it’s gotten to be too much for her to handle even with help. So, this year, I’m doing most of the work. Her main contribution was chopping pecans, but her hands tire out too fast anymore for her to do very much of it. The difficulty is in the volume. There are about fifteen cakes of various sizes and all of them loaded with rum.

But then again, the batter has a good amount of rum in it. And just in case any of the alcohol gets burned off during the cooking stage, the cakes come out of the oven and get soaked for a hour in a bath of butter rum sauce (heavier on the rum than the butter. Some people are on a low fat diet, you know.) Did I mention that all those pecans that Granny chopped also get soaked in rum before being used to top the cakes?

So, yoou see why I’m a little stewed. I have been tasting batter and eating off a sample cake over the last 72 hours. You would think a little rum-soaked flour, sugar and egg mixture wouldn’t have much effect, but it has. After three days of it, I feel a little like I’ve spent a few hours in a bar.

I’m not a rum drinker myself. If it’s hard liquor, I much prefer tequila. (You would prefer me drinking tequila too because it really frees my libido. ;-) ) So if I was in a bar this is how I would have to have my rum. Other people have rum and coke. I’ll take a rum and cake, please.

I don’t much care for rum, liquod or cake. However, for hte opportunity of seeing you a bit “baked”, I’d suffer thru it.

I used to bake fruit cakes and soak them in apricot brandy for weeks. My fridge used to smell like a drunk died in there.

What, no one to suffer your freed libido?

The only time I have ever been sick from drinking it was because of rum. I will never drink it again :) But the cakes sound like they’re really good!

I usually make Mincemeat Cookies. The mincemeat has to saok in Brandy for two days before mixing up the dough. Oh and there is brandy in the dough too.

Hmm, licking Rum cake batter off that smooth chest of yours might be a fun way to get tipsy! LOL

Boy this sounds like a classic Dan-Ackroyd-as-Julia-Child moment.
Also remind me of a Gay Show skit: If you haven’t seen it, watch this: Pt 1, then Pt 2.
