Frances Fringe

So, I have not blogged for a couple of days. Just not had time or anything interesting to say. So “blog” is a verb now? Anyway. We have rains in the mountains of East Tennessee on tuesday and somewhat on Wednesday. It was some of the far reaching effects of Hurricane Frances. Now, don’t misunderstand me. We just had a constant steady rain. That’s all. It was nothing even remotely like what the good people of Florida had to deal with. For those of you out there who are suffering the effects and loses from Frances and Charley, my prayers go out to you. East Tennessee is virtually disaster free. About the worst thing that happens here is flooding, but even then, it’s not like those wash away towns kinds of floods. There may also be a small tornado in the valley, but rarely anything major.

Now some of you may wonder why I refer to East Tennessee as if it might be a state on its own (rather than saying “eastern Tennessee” for example. But it almost is a state unto itself. There are three distinct areas to Tennessee: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee (not Central), and West Tennessee. West Tennessee is lowland and anchored by Memphis on the Mississippi River. Middle Tennessee is anchored by Nashville on the plateau. And East Tennessee is anchored by Knoxville and is the most beautiful part of the state with the Smoky Mountains and the intricate waterways of the Tennessee Valley.

If I recall history correctly, there were times in the state’s history that it tried to branch off into three separate entities. If you have ever seen the Tennessee state flag, it shows three stars in a circle to signify the unity of the state. I’m just glad the Tennessee flag doesn’t contain the dixie flag or some other racially charged symbol.

Anyway, with all the rain the other day, I only had to work a partial day. I thought we’d be off, but we did equipment maintainence inside. But I get home to find a big leak in the bathroom that was a problem a few years go, but thought we had fixed. The leak is actually in the wall somewhere above the window, so it appears to be a window leak, but it really isn’t. I guess there was just too much water too fast. I don’t have to tell you how fun it was to clean up all that mess…water, plaster, etc…and then try to stop it from coming in. It was just a lot of replacing sopping wet towels with new ones.

Had some guys out to fix it today. Won;t know if it worked until it rains again.
